What's underneath
Fashion Design
A FASHION COLLECTION CREATED DURING MY ERASMUS EXCHANGE AT UAL: LONDON COLLEGE OF FASHION. WHAT'S BEHIND FRIDA KAHLO'S BEAUTY?
A project that I created during my Erasmus Exchange at the UAL: London College of Fashion. It is about Frida Kahlo and how she intentionally used her beauty to create a well-perceived appearance towards her surrounding. Under the surface, she suffered from mental health issues and dealt with various physical disabilities that she carefully hid. What would happen if we present ourselves the way we truly are? If we actually show what’s underneath?
Therefore I turned her inside out by actively displaying her prosthesis and recreating her physical issues through a combination of foam and organic fabric manipulations. Questioning beauty standards as well as having the courage to appear vulnerable is the outtake of this project.
You can also see some sketchbook pages that are part of my collection development process. Working with collage and illustration allows me to deeply investigate different aspects of the design process.
